School stages ambitious careers festival

A Shropshire school will be welcoming more than 20 businesses across various industries as it stages a careers festival.

The packed day’s events on May 7 will include workshops, panel discussions, industry talks, networking, showcases and awards as Wrekin College looks to blend education and prepare young people for the world of work.

Director of external relations Louise Christie said the event would aim to connect pupils, parents and businesses, and showcase employability in the school while inspiring future ambitions and helping to open up pathways to success.

Businesses taking part include Coforge, Azets, Shropshire Festivals, Lanyon Bowdler and Telford Tigers together with Telford College and Telford & Wrekin Council.

The festival follows the launch of a new business networking initiative aimed at creating valuable connections between parents, alumni and local businesses.

The scheme, launched by Wrekin College, is designed to foster a thriving network of professionals, providing opportunities for collaboration, mentorship and growth within the Wrekin community.

In addition to networking events, Wrekin College has launched the Wrekin Business Directory - a free platform connecting parents, alumni and local businesses - which will be launched at the Careers Festival.

The directory serves as a valuable networking tool, enabling businesses to showcase their services and strengthen professional relationships within the community. It has already attracted a strong line-up of entrepreneurs and business owners, making it a valuable hub for professional connections.

“We are very excited to be staging this careers festival and a lot of work has been done to ensure it is both an engaging and productive event for pupils where they will gain real life skills and make positive connections,” said Louise.

“Students will get a digital guide to the day in advance with bios of each business taking part and links to their website and social media. They will be instructed to research and speak to all businesses they are keen to know more about, and businesses can vote for the students who most impress them for an award to be presented at the networking event afterwards.

“At Wrekin, we believe that preparing our pupils for the future goes beyond the classroom. Teaching them business skills and exposing them to real-world career opportunities is essential in equipping them for success.  And for that you need to bring the best education for each individual pupil together with those proving to be highly successful at work and in business.

“Our Business School, networking events, and initiatives like the careers festival all play a vital role in ensuring our pupils leave Wrekin with the confidence, skills, and connections to thrive in the workplace.”
