There’s a brand new book on the horizon, titled Fat Bernard (Antisocial adventures in a humdrum world). It’s a comedy novella from first-time local author Tristan King, from Wellington, who is far more at home illustrating and printing books than writing them, having over 30 years of experience in the design and publishing industries.
You may ask the question: is launching a book a good idea in the middle of a pandemic lockdown?
It’s hard to say – people might have less disposable income, but most are at home, bored, with plenty of time to read, but one thing’s for certain... with all the bad news currently surrounding us, we ALL need cheering up, and Tristan promises that Fat Bernard will make you laugh (between the awkward cringes).
“We all need a bit of humour in these dark times,” he says.
Tristan went on to explain the lead character: “He’s a bit of an anti-hero who experiments, socially, pushing the boundaries as far as he can.
"Hopefully everyone will be very amused by his odd outlook and reactions to life’s everyday scenarios. With a bold, care-free nature, part of you will wish you were him, whilst the other part will be very glad you’re not!”
Not only has Tristan written the pocket-sized comedy, being a designer has meant he’s also been able to illustrate it, design and typeset the book, arrange the print and finance it all himself.
