Construction firm builds solid foundations

A construction firm says it is proud to have maintained its commitment to the community in 2024 through special projects, fundraising activities and providing opportunities for the workforce of tomorrow.

SWG Group, based in Welshpool, has also made a number of donations over the past year to charities and other good causes and supported campaigns aimed at raising awareness about mental health issues.

Jacqui Gough, SWG director, said: “We are delighted to be involved in the community whenever we can - whether that be giving our time or materials to help realise local projects or taking part in a variety of fundraising opportunities for worthy causes.

“As a major employer, we also recognise our obligation to support young talent onto the career ladder - giving a solid grounding for building a structured path towards successful future employment.

“With this in mind, we are happy to report that three young people completed their apprenticeships with the company this year. Dan Dyke and Michael Peters finished their QS Degree apprenticeships while Chloe Evans completed her Level 4 AAT.

“We took on four new apprentices - Ben Hamon and Josh Yates as QS degree apprentices, Iwan Davies as a construction degree apprentice and Alisha Evans as a Level 2 AAT.

“We also provided work experience or education support opportunities for eight people during 2024 and continued our support of the SWG Academy at Llanfyllin High School, as well as attending career fairs in Oswestry, Newtown, Bishop’s Castle and Hadley, and we provided a guest speaker at this year’s Women in Construction event.”

As for charity work, SWG staff took part in the Shrewsbury Dragon Boat Race for Severn Hospice, the National Three Peaks Challenge for the Lighthouse Charity and hosted a Christmas Jumper Day for Save the Children.

The company has also made donations or provided sponsorship to: Berriew Show, Treorchy Male Choir, Welshpool 1940’s weekend, Welshpool Football Club, Armed Forces Day in Dudley, Circus Starr and Corporate Young Carers Team, Sandwell.

Jacqui added: “We have also taken part in two campaigns focusing on mental health, World Mental Health Day and the Toilet Door Poster Campaign. Mental health and good wellbeing are things we take extremely seriously at SWG and we have a number of newly-trained Mental Health First Aiders.

“Our work in the community this year has included hosting a coffee morning in aid of Healthy Care Living, we made a £500 donation to Ysgo Bro Hyddgen towards external shelter repairs, took part in a bulb planting scheme with residents in Machynlleth and redecorated St Mary’s Community Centre in Wednesbury by donating material and labour.”
