Two years of success for dog field

Rowton Grange is marking two years of success with its one-acre Secure  Dog Field, providing a haven for dogs from Shropshire and beyond to enjoy off-lead freedom.

The farm diversification project, initiated by owner Hayley Williams, offers a secure and safe environment for dogs and their owners to relax and enjoy the countryside.

From obtaining planning permission to opening the gates, the project took just five months to launch, with the initial investment being recouped within 18 months.

The idea was born out of a need identified by Hayley, who observed the increasing reports during and post COVID-19 of dog-related issues.

Along with the increase in dog ownership during the pandemic, there was an increase in incidents such as untrained dogs worrying livestock, being nervous or aggressive around other dogs and congested walking routes.

"Dogs, like us, experienced changes during Covid, but they lack our understanding of how to deal with variations to their routine. I wanted to offer a space where dogs and their owners could enjoy being together without any distractions or worries.” said Hayley.

“Our facility has become particularly popular among the Shrewsbury and mid-Wales rescue dog community, providing a much-needed solution for owners who do not know their dog’s history or, for various reasons, cannot be let off the lead.

“We welcome visitors from Wales, the West Midlands, and even as far away as Scotland. The field has been a venue for dogs and their “pawrents” to hold special events such as litter parties where mum and pups get together complete with cake and gift bags, birthday celebrations, playdates, dog training, photoshoots and filming.”

The one-acre flat field in the tranquil Shropshire countryside is enclosed with six-foot-high fencing and a secure coded gate.

Earlier this year, Rowton Grange introduced innovative mesh sniffing boxes filled with sheep’s wool and silage, providing non-toxic enrichment that takes advantage of dogs' keenest sense, their sense of smell.

In the wake of the XL bully ban in December 2023, Hayley made the necessary adjustments to ensure these dogs could continue to access the field.

"The response has been overwhelmingly positive, and it’s gratifying to see how much these dogs and their owners enjoy the space," she said.

Rowton Grange Secure Dog Field represents a great example of farm diversification, showcasing how rural businesses can innovate to meet community needs while complementing existing farm activities.
